The procedure, which developer Orthocell says is a stem-cell application, costs $3500 and is used mainly for knee and hamstring injuries. A piece of healthy tendon is taken from a patient with the cells multiplied and injected into the injured tendon. “We’ve had some very good results, in elite and sub-elite players as well and also in patients who are just your average punter,” Koulouris said. “We’re often treating the worst of the worst, those who haven’t responded to other things and we’re still getting good results with them — 70 to 80 per cent success rate.” Dr Koulouris said the use of tendon cells differed from fat-derived therapies. “It’s safer to use the tendon cell than the fat cell because what you’re using is the end product,” he said. “You’re using the same cell.
